Dragon Ball Daima: Unveiling the Power and Excitement

Introduction

A brand new Dragon Ball anime titled “Dragon Ball Daima” was announced at New York Comic Con 2023. Produced by Toei Animation, it is the sixth televised animated installment in the Dragon Ball media franchise. It is also the second and final series written by franchise creator Akira Toriyama, who passed away in March 2024.

The highly anticipated Dragon Ball Daima anime series has returned with an exciting new visual, cast additions, and a main trailer. The trailer features Goku in Super Saiyan form and previews the show’s opening theme.

Production

Toei Animation revealed on October 12, 2023, that a new anime called Dragon Ball Daima will debut in fall 2024. Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama is said to be “significantly involved beyond his typical role” and is credited in the teaser trailer for the original work, story, and character designs.

Toriyama shared a message at the Comic Con panel, explaining that while “DAIMA” is a coined term, it is written in Japanese as “ๅคง้ญ”,” which translates to “Evil” in English. Akio Iyoku, the executive producer of the Dragon Ball franchise, shared that the series had been in development for five years, with the title finalized less than a month prior. He also noted that Toriyama “crafted the entire story,” which Iyoku described as having a “strong sense of adventure and abundant action.”

On January 28, 2024, a second trailer with Goku and new character designs by Toriyama was revealed at the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour event. Following Toriyama’s death on March 1, 2024, his message for the Tokyo Anime Awards Lifetime Achievement Award revealed that he had become deeply involved in Dragon Ball Daima, despite it originally being planned without his direct input.

However, Toriyama’s work on Dragon Ball initially featured a more light-hearted tone and rounder character designs. The first look at Dragon Ball Daima closely resembles Toriyama’s original series, in contrast to the intense, high-stakes battles of DBS’s Tournament of Power.

Release

Dragon Ball Daima is set to have its world premiere at Tokyo Big Sight on October 6, 2024, as part of the Dragon Ball Daimatsuri event, which marks the 40th anniversary of the original manga. During this special event, the first episode will be shown three times throughout the day. Notably, cast members will attend the first two screenings, providing fans with an opportunity to see the new series and interact with the stars.

Following the premiere, Dragon Ball Daima will begin its television broadcast on Fuji TV on October 11, 2024. The series will air on Fridays at 11:40 p.m. as part of a new anime programming block. The debut episode will be ten minutes longer than the standard episode length, offering viewers an extended first look at the new installment in the beloved franchise.

Story & Characters

A new threat emerges after Goku and Vegeta defeat Babidi and Majin Buu. The teaser introduces two unknown antagonists. Shenron grants a wish that transforms Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, Master Roshi, Piccolo, and even Supreme Kai Shin and Kibito into chibi-style “Mini” versions of themselves.

On September 4, 2024, a trailer revealed that Dragon Ball Daima will feature the Demon Realm, adding new lore to the Dragon Ball universe. It also confirmed that Goku will retain his Super Saiyan powers even in his Mini form.

While Dragon Ball GT began with Goku transforming into a child, Dragon Ball Daima promises to be “A Story Never Before Told in Dragon Ball.” This suggests that the new series will set itself apart by offering a distinct and novel experience compared to Dragon Ball GT.

In Dragon Ball Daima, characters are transformed into child-like “Mini” versions. Goku and Vegeta can still access Super Saiyan forms, while Bulma, Master Roshi, and Piccolo keep their core abilities. Supreme Kai Shin and Kibito are also Mini versions. The series explores the mysterious Demon Realm and introduces new villains, promising a unique twist on the Dragon Ball universe.
