The Greatest of All Time

The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) is a Tamil (Indian) film that was released on September 5, 2024. Directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by AGS Entertainment, GOAT stars Thalapathy Vijay in the lead role, alongside Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Ajmal Ameer, Mohan, Jayaram, Sneha, Laila, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Vaibhav, Yogi Babu, Premgi Amaren, and Yugendran.

This film follows Gandhi, a former leader of a special anti-terrorist squad, as he reconciles with his former team members to address the problems arising from their past actions.

Release

The film was officially announced in May 2023 under the tentative title Thalapathy 68, marking Vijay’s 68th film as a leading actor. The official title was revealed in December 2023. Principal photography began in October 2023 and took place intermittently over several phases.

The Greatest of All Time premiered in theaters on September 5, 2024, and was available in both standard and IMAX formats. In addition to the original Tamil version, the film was also released with dubbed versions in Telugu and Hindi. The Telugu version retained the film’s original title, The Greatest of All Time, while the Hindi version was released under the title Thalapathy is the G.O.A.T.

In the United Kingdom, the film also debuted on September 5, but it was classified as a 15 by the British Board of Film Classification. This rating was given due to the film’s depiction of strong violence, threatening situations, detailed injury scenes, and other disturbing content. Despite these elements, the UK release did not feature any cuts, allowing audiences to experience the film in its entirety as intended by the filmmakers.

Plot

In 2008, the Special Anti-Terrorism Squad in Kenya, comprising Gandhi, Sunil, Kalyan, and Ajay, tracks down their former chief, Menon, who has been fleeing after being charged with treason. They seize uranium from Menon and subsequently destroy the train he was on in an attempt to kill him. Gandhi lives with his pregnant wife, Anusuya (Anu), and their five-year-old son, Jeevan.

Gandhi decides to take his family with him to Bangkok to alleviate Anusuya’s suspicions of infidelity when he is assigned a new mission. After completing the mission, Gandhi and his family are attacked, and Jeevan goes missing. The police find a charred body and believe it to be Jeevan’s.

In 2024, Gandhi has left the squad and now works as an immigration officer at Chennai International Airport. He and Anusuya live separately, with their daughter Jeevitha residing with Anusuya. Gandhi’s former boss requests him to go to Moscow to train new officers at the Indian Embassy. Though initially reluctant, Gandhi agrees. However, while he is there, the embassy is attacked by a gang. Gandhi fights off the attackers and is stunned to discover that one of them resembles a younger version of himself.

He quickly realizes that the attacker is actually Jeevan and confirms this when Jeevan helps him fend off the rest of the attackers. However, Nazeer calls Gandhi for an urgent meeting, but during the meeting, they are attacked by a masked man.

In 2008, Menon survived the train explosion but lost his family in the incident. Seeking revenge for his family’s death, Menon tracked Gandhi to Bangkok, kidnapped Jeevan, and placed him in a juvenile facility, where he instilled fear in the boy. Menon then rescued Jeevan from the facility, earning his trust and renaming him Sanjay.

During an interrogation, Jeevan grabs Sunil’s gun, appears to kill him, and forces Gandhi to help him escape. It is later revealed that Sunil survived and kills Kalyan. Jeevan’s final plan is to detonate bombs at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium to kill the audience. With the aid of his brother-in-law Seenu and daughter Jeevitha, Gandhi retrieves the bomb detonators and confronts Jeevan, ultimately killing him on top of the stadium.

In a mid-credits scene, it is revealed that the Jeevan killed by Gandhi was actually a clone. The real Jeevan, now a scientist specializing in cloning, is still alive and starts creating more clones to further his plans.
