What Is Hashira?

The Hashira in Demon Slayer are recognized as the most powerful members of the Demon Slayer Corps, standing as the top swordsmen among all Demon Slayers. Each Hashira is assigned a unique title that reflects their individual fighting styles and techniques.

Each Hashira has mastered a unique Breathing Style through rigorous training. The Hashiras are ranked primarily based on their raw power, but donโ€™t be fooledโ€”those at the lower end of the ranking are far from weak. Ranking the Hashira by strength is challenging due to their diverse approaches and techniques.

To become a Hashira, a demon slayer must be the strongest in the entire Demon Slayer Corps. There are two ways to prove one’s worthiness for this esteemed rank. The first method is to achieve a demon kill count of at least 50. The second method involves defeating a demon from the Twelve Kizuki – the elite group of 12 powerful demons who serve directly under the Demon Lord, Muzan Kibutsuji.

12. The Fomer Flower Hashira โ€“ Kaneo Kocho

Kanae Kocho was the older sister of Shinobu Kocho. Known for her gentle natuere and exceptional skills as a Demon Slayer, Kanae was a formidable warrior. Despite her strength, she was ultimately defeated by the Upper Rank Demon Two, Doma. Her abilities allowed her to challenge an upper rank demon, showcasing her remarkable prowess.

She possessed the Art of Flower Breathing. Kanae’s spirit even appears to her younger sister, Shinobu, during the final battle to encourage her to continue fighting.

11. The Former Thunder Hashira โ€“ Jigoro Kuwajima

Jigoro Kuwajima, the former Thunder Hashira, was the teacher of Zenitsu Agatsuma and another student named Kaigaku. As a veteran Demon Slayer, Jigoro served as the Thunder Hashira for many years until an injury forced his retirement from the Demon Slayer Corps.

Jigoro was renowned as the “Roaring Hashira” due to his exceptional skills. He was an impressive slayer, but ultimately, Jigoro took his own life in a ritual suicide after Kaigaku was defeated and became a demon.

10. The Former Water Hashira โ€“ Sakonji Urokodaki

Sakonji Urokodaki is the former Water Hashira. He now lives alone and trains young aspiring Demon Slayers, such as Tanjiro Kamado. His trained a Giyu Tomioka, a current Hashira, that show us the exceptional skill he possesses.

Even in his old age, Urokodaki remains skilled enough to protect Nezuko when she is entrusted to him. Like Tanjiro, Urokodaki possesses a strong sense of smell, which can sometimes give him an advantage in battle.

9. The Insect Hashira โ€“ Shinobu Kocho

Shinobu Kocho, the younger sister of the Flower Hashira Kanae Kocho, is a formidable Demon Slayer. Her abilities depend more on her cunning and intelligence than on her physical strength.

She is the only Hashira who does not slice off the heads of demons. Instead, she uses a special poison extracted from Wisteria to kill them.

8. The Mist Hashira โ€“ Muichiro Tokito

Muichiro Tokito is a major supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He initially hits Tanjiro with rocks when Tanjiro interrupts Kagaya Ubuyashiki. Despite his limited role at first, Muichiro’s importance grows as the series progresses.

Muichiro is the Mist Hashira, known for his use of the Mist Breathing sword style. He is also the youngest Hashira, achieving the rank at just 14 years old. He became a Hashira only two months after joining the Demon Slayer Corps.

7. The Love Hashira โ€“ Mitsuri Kanroji

Mitsuri Kanroji a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Coprs and the current Love Hashira. Mitsuriโ€™s journey to becoming a Hashira was filled with challenges. Her mastery of the Breath of Love, derived from the Breath of Flames, lets her deliver powerful attacks with remarkable agility.

Kanroji initially joined the Demon Slayer Corps not to enhance her own fighting skills, but to find a suitable husband, as she believes he must be stronger than she is.

6. The Sanke Hashira โ€“ Obanai Iguro

Obanai Iguro is a short young man in the Demon Slayer Corps. He wields the Breath of the Serpent and holds the title of Snake Hashira. He has sharp, pointed eyes with unusual colors due to his heterochromia. His right eye yellow and left eye is turquoise. Obanaiโ€™s lower-half face covers with bandages to hide his mouth which was cut from the corners.

Obanai is a strict and merciless person with very few people he cares about. During Pillar training, he ties up lower-ranked Demon Slayers for minor offenses, such as annoying him, and uses them as obstacles.

5. The Sound Hashira โ€“ Tengen Uzui

Tengen Uzui is the Sound Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps and the only ninja among them. He was discharged from the Corps after losing his arm in a battle with the Upper Rank Six Kizuki demons.

He serves as the supporting character in the entertainment district arc. “The God of Flashiness” and “The God of Festivals” are perfect titles for the tangen, on a mission to expose the demons lurking in the entertainment district. These monikers are also beloved quotes among Demon Slayer fans.

4. The Wind Hashira โ€“ Senemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi Shinazugawa is the Wind Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps and the older brother of Genya Shinazugawa. He is known for his intense hatred of demons, driven by the numerous tragedies he has experienced as a result of their actions.

He is the fastest Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps, using his speed to gain an advantage in battle. He is always angry in any conversation.

3. The Water Hashira โ€“ Giyu Tomioka

Giyu Tomioka was trained by the former Water Hashira Sakonji Urokodaki. He is very composed in battle, showing unmatched calmness and control. Giyu is one of the main members of Hashira. He is the one who recruited Tanjoro Kamado for the Demon Slayer Corps.

Giyu is also someone who seems unaware of how others perceive him and is surprised to learn that many people dislike him. Though Giyu appears emotionless, he still risks his life to protect Tanjiro and Nezuko.

2. The Flame Hashira โ€“ Kyojuro Rengoku

Kyojuro Rengoku was one of the greatest Demon Slayers in the Demon Slayer Corps. As the Flame Hashira, he utilized the Flame Breathing techniques. Rengoku uses the strength of Flame Breathing along with his confident attitude to become a powerful Demon Slayer.

He is the main Hashira in the Mugen Train Arc of the Demon Slayer series. Although he fights Akaza and manages to save every passenger on the train, he ultimately fails to defeat Akaza and loses his life while protecting others.

1. The Stone Hashira โ€“ Gyomei Himejima

Gyomei Himejima is one of the tallest characters in the series, towering over the other Hashira. Despite his imposing figure, he has a gentle and sensitive nature, often seen shedding tears for his fellow Demon Slayers.

He is a blind and devout Demon Slayer who serves as the Stone Hashira, the strongest Hashira in the entire Corps. Gyomei is widely regarded as the top rank among Demon Slayer’s Hashira.
